What a Painting Workmanship Warranty Really Covers, and What It Doesn't

A warranty is only as good as what it covers. Here is how to read one and what to expect from ours.

By Suncoast Home Painting

Workmanship warranty vs. manufacturer warranty

There are two kinds of warranties on a paint job. A manufacturer warranty covers the paint product itself. A workmanship warranty covers how the painter prepared the surface and applied the paint. Most paint failures come from prep and application, so the workmanship warranty is the one that matters most.

What a good workmanship warranty covers

A solid warranty should cover failures caused by the painter's work, including:

  • Peeling
  • Blistering
  • Chipping or flaking
  • Poor adhesion from improper preparation or application

What is usually excluded

No honest warranty covers everything. Common exclusions include:

  • Damage from moisture problems such as roof leaks, plumbing leaks, or irrigation.
  • Impact damage, accidents, and neglect.
  • Normal wear and natural fading over time.
  • Horizontal walking surfaces like decks and floors.

Questions to ask about any warranty

Is it in writing? How long does it last? Does it transfer if you sell the home? How do you make a claim, and how quickly? A warranty that only exists as a verbal promise is not much of a warranty.

Our warranty

Every Suncoast Home Painting job carries at least a 3 year written workmanship warranty, with longer coverage on select premium paint systems. It is transferable to the next owner, and interior projects include free touch-ups for life. To make a claim, let us know in writing within 30 days of noticing the issue and we will come look at it with you.
