How to Choose a Painting Contractor: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Not every painter does the job the same way. These seven questions help you tell the difference before you sign.
Why the questions matter
Painting looks simple, so it is easy to choose on price alone. But the difference between a job that lasts 3 years and one that lasts 10 is almost entirely in the prep, the products, and the people. Ask these questions before you sign anything.
The 7 questions
- 1. Are you insured? Ask for proof. A good contractor will send it without hesitation.
- 2. Who will actually be in my home? Find out whether the company uses its own crew and who supervises the job.
- 3. What prep is included? Washing, patching, caulking, sanding, and priming should be spelled out in writing.
- 4. What products will you use, and how many coats? Get the brand and product line, not just a color.
- 5. Is the estimate written and itemized? You should know exactly what you are paying for.
- 6. Do you offer a written warranty? Ask what it covers, how long it lasts, and how claims work.
- 7. How will you protect my home? Floors, furniture, landscaping, and pools should all be covered.
Red flags to watch for
Be cautious of a large cash deposit up front, a verbal only quote, pressure to sign today, or an estimate that is far below everyone else with no explanation. Low bids usually mean skipped prep.
