How Often Should You Repaint a Stucco Home in Florida?

Florida sun and humidity are hard on stucco. Here is how long a good paint job lasts and the signs it is time to repaint.

The short answer

Most stucco homes in Sarasota and Manatee County need a repaint every 5 to 12 years, and where a home lands in that range comes down to paint, prep, and location. With higher quality paint and proper prep, expect 7 to 12 years. With lower quality paint, poor prep, or a tough location like full sun, heavy irrigation spray, or close to the water, expect 5 to 7 years.

Signs your stucco needs paint

Walk around your home and look for these:

  • Chalking: rub your hand on the wall. If it comes away covered in color, the paint is breaking down.
  • Fading: south and west facing walls usually fade first.
  • Hairline cracks: stucco moves, and once cracks open, water can get behind the surface.
  • Peeling or bubbling: a sign of moisture or poor adhesion.
  • Rust or orange stains near the base: usually from well water irrigation.
  • Mildew or dark streaks, especially on shaded walls.

Paint is protection, not just color

Paint on stucco is a weather barrier. When it wears through, water gets into cracks and the repair bill goes up. Repainting at the right time is usually cheaper than waiting until the stucco itself needs work.

How to make the next paint job last

The prep matters more than the paint. A proper exterior job includes a full wash to remove chalk and mildew, crack repair with an elastomeric patch, fresh caulk at windows and doors, and a coating rated for high UV and moisture applied at the right thickness. Pointing sprinkler heads away from the walls helps too.

That is how we paint every stucco home, and it is why we can back the work with a minimum 3 year workmanship warranty.
